The People Behind the Row
The World's Toughest Row is an unsupported crossing — no resupply, no physical assistance, no towing. Once Marc leaves La Gomera, whatever happens out there is entirely on him. But "unsupported" only describes what happens on the water. On land, Marc's 2024/25 crossing had a small team behind it, and they mattered just as much to how it went.
Bronwen Schoenfeld — the lifeline on land
Marc's partner, Bronwen, tracked his position throughout the crossing via satellite Garmin messages, and kept a handwritten journal plotting his progress day by day. For Marc, alone at sea for weeks with no visual reference beyond water in every direction, that journal became something to hold onto — proof, in her handwriting, of exactly how far he'd already come.
Bronwen also gave him a nickname that says a lot about how he prepares: "Goldilocks" — for his need to have everything "just right" before he'll commit to it. Every sharp edge on Dan-Dan ground smooth. Every scenario thought through in advance. Not stiff, exactly — just precise.
Heiko Genzmer — reading the weather
Business partner Heiko Genzmer sent regular weather reports throughout the crossing, helping Marc understand what conditions were coming before they arrived. On a boat with no engine and no way to outrun a storm, knowing what's ahead is one of the only real advantages a rower has.
Family, from a distance
Marc's sister relayed messages of support from home throughout the crossing — a reminder, however small, that a lot of people were following along and willing him forward, even from thousands of kilometres away.
Why this matters
It would be easy to tell Marc's story as a purely solitary one — a man alone against an ocean. That's true for the physical crossing itself. But it undersells the effort it takes to get someone into that boat in a state to finish: the tracking, the weather calls, the messages relayed, the years of preparation alongside a partner who knows exactly how "just right" needs to look.
As Marc builds back toward December 2027, this is the team quietly doing the same work again — off camera, on land, making sure the man in the boat has everything he needs to focus on nothing but rowing.
